What Happened When I Finally Put God First

The night before my birthday, I prayed a simple prayer.

Lord, what do You want me to focus on this year?

I’d been back in church for about six months. I was starting a new year with new goals, the way I always do. But this time, I didn’t want to make the plan on my own. I wanted to ask Him first.

The next morning, I got up as the sun was rising. And snow was falling from the sky.

If you’ve never lived in Charleston, here’s what you need to know: it almost never snows here. This was the first real snow in a decade. A rare storm, on my birthday, the morning after I asked God for a sign.

I just knew it was Him.

The Answer

I sat in my office and watched the sunrise come through the snow-covered trees. And I felt Him telling me:

“Put Me first, and I’ll take care of the rest.”

Tears ran down my face. I didn’t know what that would look like. I only knew the peace I felt in that moment was overwhelming. So I answered the only way I could.

Lord, I’m ready. Show me the way. You have my yes.

Then Nothing Happened

I wish I could tell you everything changed overnight. That I woke up the next morning with perfect clarity and unshakable peace.

That’s not how it worked.

The first few weeks were quiet. I kept going to church. I kept praying in the mornings. But nothing felt different. I started to wonder if I’d imagined the whole thing.

Maybe you’ve been there too. You prayed. You meant it. And then you waited, and heard nothing.

What Actually Changed

About three weeks later, our pastor said something that hit me so hard I had to write it down:

God doesn’t always change your circumstances. Sometimes He changes your heart, so you can handle them differently.

I looked around at my life. Nothing on the outside had changed. I still didn’t have all the answers about what was next.

But I realized I wasn’t panicking anymore. I wasn’t desperate. I was calm. Not because I had my life figured out, but because I trusted that Someone else did.

That’s when I knew it was real.

Over the next few months, that peace kept growing. Not in big, dramatic ways. In small, steady ones. When I felt anxious, I stopped reaching for my phone and started praying instead. I stopped obsessing over my plans and started asking God what He wanted me to do next.

My circumstances didn’t change. I did.

Letting Go of Control

Looking back, I can see what had been holding me back. I’d always been willing to go to God in a crisis, when I was scared and needed help. But I’d never fully trusted Him with everything.

Putting Him first meant letting go of control. Not all at once. Slowly, one day at a time.

And the more I let go, the more peace I found. All the answers I’d been searching for started to become clear. Not because I figured them out, but because I finally stopped trying to do it all on my own.

That snowy morning, God asked for my yes. I’m so glad I gave it.

One Simple Step

Tonight, ask God the same question I did: What do You want me to focus on?

Then pay attention. His answer might not come as snow. It might come slowly, in a quiet sense of peace you didn’t have before. But it will come.
