I Read the Whole Bible in One Year. Here’s What Changed.

I grew up in church. I knew the stories. Noah and the ark. David and Goliath. Jonah and the whale. But I only knew them in bits and pieces, like scattered pages from a book I’d never actually read.

About six months after I went back to church and gave God my yes, I decided it was time. I was going to read the whole Bible, cover to cover, in one year.

I finished this summer. And it changed the way I see God, other people, and the world.

How I Did It

I used The Bible Recap. It walks you through the whole Bible in a year, a little each day, with a short recap to help you understand what you just read.

I read every morning during my quiet hour, before the house woke up. Coffee in hand. Just me and that day’s reading.

What I loved most was the order. Instead of reading straight through, the plan arranges the books so you see the same story from different angles. A king’s reign told one way, then told again from another perspective. Prophets speaking right in the middle of the events they were warning about. It made the whole thing come alive.

The Hard Parts

I’ll be honest. Some books were hard to get through. The genealogies. The long lists of tribes and names. Some stretches felt repetitive.

But I kept going. And somewhere along the way, I realized even the slow parts had a purpose. Every name was part of a bigger story that was still unfolding.

People Haven’t Changed Much

This is what surprised me most. Humanity hasn’t changed all that much.

We’ve all fallen, right from the beginning. The people in the Bible wrestle with the same things we do. Greed. Pride. Jealousy. Fear. There’s always someone chasing something. More land. More power. More approval. The temptations are the same ones we face today, just in different clothes.

There were good leaders and bad ones. Faithful people who stumbled. Broken people God used anyway.

Reading it, I kept thinking, This is us. The noise and the chasing I’d been trying to quiet in my own life aren’t new. They’re as old as the garden.

The Greatest Story Ever Written

What kept me going was finally seeing the Bible for what it is. Not a rulebook. Not a collection of Sunday school lessons. The greatest story ever written.

For the first time, I understood it from start to finish. I could see God’s plan so clearly, from the very first page to the last, and how all of it worked together.

The Question I Finally Understood

For years, there was one question I couldn’t answer. It kept me standing at the edge of my faith instead of going all in: If God loves everyone, why would He exclude the good people I knew who found Him differently than I did?

Reading the whole story is what finally answered it for me. When you see how far we fell, and how far God went to bring us back, it makes sense. The truth became so clear: why Jesus had to come, and why He had to die.

I understand now. And that understanding made my faith deeper than it’s ever been.

If You’re Thinking About It

You don’t have to read the whole Bible in a year to grow closer to God. If that feels like too much right now, that’s okay. Start where you are.

But if something in you is curious, if you’ve only ever known the stories in bits and pieces like I did, I’d encourage you to try. Find a plan that helps you understand what you’re reading. Give yourself grace on the hard days and the slow chapters. If you fall behind, just pick back up.

One Simple Step

Tomorrow morning, before you check your phone, read one passage. Just one. Sit with it for a minute and ask God to show you something in it.

That’s how every big story starts. One page at a time.
