Untamed by Glennon Doyle

"Every life is an unprecedented experiment. This life is mine alone. So I have stopped asking people for directions to places they’ve never been. There is no map. We are all pioneers." - Glennon Doyle

The Stories We Tell by Joanna Gaines

Untamed is one of the best books I've read this year. It's an amazing story about having the courage to build the life you were meant to live. Glennon Doyle broke all the "rules" and found true happiness by following to her inner guide. She stopped worrying about what the world would think and learned to trust herself when deciding how she should live. I truly appreciate when someone can ignore all the outside influences and follow the path they know is right for them. This book is Doyle's way of sharing her journey to freedom with the hope that it encourages others to be brave enough to live life on their own terms.

"Blessed are those brave enough to make things awkward, for they wake us up and move us forward." - Glennon Doyle

Doyle, like many of us, has wrestled with some of life's tough questions about religion, politics, parenting, and societal norms. Her memoir goes deep into her views on these topics. She's not afraid to share her opinion, which I admire. The fact that we don't agree on everything reinforces her message that we all must take our own path and learn to listen to our unique inner voice for guidance. We don't all think exactly alike or have identical dreams in life. It's our differences that make us special and beautiful.

She has an amazing message about trusting yourself even when everyone around you says not to do it. When you do what's best for you, that's when you live your true authentic life. She asked herself, "Who was I before I became what the world taught me to be?" Such an important question to ponder. Take a moment to think about it. Once you have that vision, I hope you are brave enough to change anything that isn't exactly what you imagine your life should be.

"Sandcastles are beautiful, but we cannot live inside of them. Because the tide rises. That's what the tide does. We must remember: I am the builder, not the castle. I am separate and whole, over here, eyes on the horizon, sun on my shoulders, welcoming the tide. Building, rebuilding. Playfully. Lightly. Never changing. Always changing." - Glennon Doyle

My favorite message in the book involves the ever-evolving nature of life. We are always in transition. Change is what helps us move forward and get closer to our truest selves. As someone who has built and rebuilt my life many times, I know the true value in embracing change and the beauty it can bring to life. At a young age, I feared the unknown. Now I seek it. It's what makes life new and exciting, and it's how we evolve. If you can see a vision of your ideal life, you can create it.

"I am a human being, meant to be in perpetual becoming. If I am living bravely, my entire life will become a million deaths and rebirths. My goal is not to remain the same but to live in such a way that each day, year, moment, relationship, conversation, and crisis is the material I use to become a truer, more beautiful version of myself." - Glennon Doyle

If you want to know more about the book, I found this wonderful interview with Marie Forleo (one of my favorite entrepreneurs) and Glennon Doyle that is worth watching. In the interview she talks about how this is not a self-help book. It's not about self-improvement. It's a book about "returning to that person you were before you were 10 years old." That's when she says we begin to be influenced by the world and start hiding our true selves.

Are you ready to live your authentic life? Glennon says ask yourself this one question: What is the truest, most beautiful story you can imagine about your life? Grab a journal and write it down. This is your blueprint to becoming untamed. Now, go start living your story.
